“My days at the Guardian have changed over the years – from interning through Covid, to rotating across desks as a cadet, and covering national and international affairs as a reporter,” says Rafqa Touma. “Pitching and being commissioned on both breaking and feature stories is dynamic and exciting. It really lends itself to learning on the job – and from reporters and editors I have long looked up to, no less!”

Touma has recently taken up a new role as video host. “My days have been fast-paced and collaborative, with an eye to what stories will reach new audiences and how we can engage them.”

Her early interest in journalism came from the classroom. “History and English were my favourite subjects in school, and journalism felt like the closest thing to them in the real world. I was drawn to its inherent curiosity for our ever changing world, and the stories within it.”

She credits her studies at UTS with giving her strong foundations.

I feel fortunate for the relationships UTS helped me foster – with veteran journalists generous with their mentorship, and peers who have become lifelong friends.

Her advice is simple: “Don’t be afraid to do things out of order, put your hand up, and experiment!”
