Master of Sport Management (Extension)

Hello there. My name is Nico Schulenkorf. I’m the Course Director for Masters of Sport Management here at UTS. Here at UTS, we teach a range of postgraduate programs in Sport Management and options include a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or a full Masters degree. In our courses, we discuss critical managerial issues for a variety of sport projects, specifically our program features subjects that develop Sport Management knowledge across areas such as Business Studies, Globalisation, Governance, Marketing, Media, Development, Technology, Innovation and Social Impact. For instance, in our Sport Governance and Integrity unit, we discuss issues around match fixing, doping, betting and corruption.

In our Sports and Event globalisation class, we look at topics such as Global Athlete migration, the use of labour in developing countries and the associated sweatshop debates and also the topic of sport for development. So overall our courses are designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to operate and lead in the increasingly complex and dynamic sport industry. Importantly, the courses are designed for students from diverse backgrounds and are delivered using flexible learning methods, therefore making them suitable for working professionals as well as domestic and international students. 

Our Sport Management program is housed in the UTS Business School which is in the heart of Sydney’s leading business, creative and entrepreneurial precincts and therefore provides us to connect closely with the sport and event industries. Also, we have access to the new UTS campus in the Rugby Australia Building at Moore Park where there are leading sport and exercise facilities and where we have close access to the Sydney Football Stadium and Sydney Cricket Ground. Also, we’re industry connected and all our programs are developed with business practitioners and sporting associations. They feature industry guest lectures, case studies, live projects, internships and mentoring. 

Finally, our teaching staff are leading experts in their fields and work closely on research projects with industry. For example, I’ve been working in the Pacific Islands, trying to provide opportunities for disadvantaged communities and particularly women to access sport and have the opportunity to develop healthy lifestyles and their social development through sporting activities.

G'day, I'm Pat Cummins. I'm so sorry I can't be there in person tonight for the award ceremony. I'm over in India at the moment, we're about to start a Cricket World Cup, which is very exciting. But I just want to say I'm hugely privileged and proud to accept the 2023 Alumni Award for business. So it took me six years to do my business degree, years I look back really fondly on and were really formative years for myself.

During those years, I was still a professional cricketer, but I probably spent more time injured than actually playing cricket. And what that meant was, I had this other side of myself that I could concentrate on uni, and not only kept me feeling like a normal 18 or 19 year old going to uni with my mates. It opened my eyes to a world much wider than just playing cricket. I'd love to thank the Australian cricketers association for their help and support, getting me through the course and helping fund my years at uni, as well as all the amazing professors and Deans that helped me with some flexibility around scheduling. I remember doing some tests over in I think it was South Africa and India and I've been sitting exams all around the world throughout those years. Just a huge thank you again.

I look back at those years at UTS really fondly and it's really helped shaped who I am today. And congratulations to all the other award winners there.

After I graduated from undergraduate school and worked for a couple of years I know what I want. I know I want to work in sports. I want to do a little bit maybe marketing media so UTS gave me an opportunity to actually go back to school and studying get my degree. I remember the day when I came to Sydney I was like crying at airport I was like 25 years old already not that young. I wasn't sure what's gonna happen I'm going to move to a new place I've never lived overseas before. I don't know what's gonna happen I'm really glad I made that decision now I have my life in Sydney. I have a great job I have friends I have like a career I always want to chase.

I think what make UTS different is one thing is the size of the class usually it's around like 20 to 30 students there so which means like you will get more attention from the professor and also if you have any questions like they're all very friendly and willing to help you even like during like weekend I remember this you reply my email. I think UTS course is very practical so you'll have the chance to get a like internship in the industry even the professor will send you links okay they're hiring someone they're like finding intern so they will refer you to some like local companies. Australia gave an international student like a working opportunity inside you can work like part-time and also the same time studying and also after graduate from uni they will give you two or three years working Visa I think that's quite important because a lot of like International students kind of want to gain working experience

Practice your English that's a very important thing if you want to find a job in Australia also if they can find an internship when they're studying go for it it's like to know the local culture especially with sports right Australia into like Cricket rugby but in China we only watch like soccer and basketball that's the main difference

My kind of like my dream job I work for the best company in the industry I love sports like everyone I worked with they're so into sports in football like we're pretty much the best like data provider we work with like English Premier League Bundesliga La Liga and also FIFA I'm really thankful for the two-year studying UTS without the studying here I don't think I have a chance to work overseas work for such a great company.

Hi. My name is Margot Harley. I’m Head of Competition Development and Strategy at Cricket Australia for the Men’s and Women’s Big Bash Leagues. I studied a Masters of Management majoring in Sports Management at the UTS Business School.

I’m very passionate about women’s sport which at the moment I’m very fortunate to be able to play a big role in. I’m working on the Women’s Big Bash strategy so really providing growth and resource to an area of our sport that is world-beating with the world's best players in the Australian team and now my role is really to showcase them on a large stage in the media and in the community. 

As someone who played a lot of sport growing up I know what sport did for me and the change that it made and the confidence that it gave me so now the role that I hold I’m hoping that I can provide the next generation of young girls that confidence to try what they want to try.

As a female leader, the barriers that I faced would mainly be unconscious bias. Having worked as a woman in a male-dominated industry being sports there are preconceived notions of a woman’s place. I’ve definitely come across individuals that think I shouldn’t be in the position I am and I’ve had to change their mind shall we say.

UTS the Business School actually really helped with my confidence the fact that I had a Masters degree in Sport Management really gave me the confidence to know that I was where I was meant to be.

Be confident in where you want to go and be vocal about it. Reach out to your network and tell them your desires and your dreams. That’s what I did and things have eventuated for me purely because I’ve had the conversation with someone about where I hope to be or what I hope to achieve.
