Carpooling can be a convenient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to travel to uni.

More about carpooling

Users can register as either a driver or passenger, for regular or one-off trips. You can make your own arrangements using carpooling programs. With any carpooling arrangement, each person is responsible for their own safety and security.

UTS recommends the following points as a guide:

  • Don’t exchange home addresses until after you’ve met for the first time.
  • It’s best to meet for the first time in a public place, like on campus or outside your local shops.
  • Arrange to see each other’s identification (student card and/or drivers licence) to make sure your travel partner is who they say they are.
  • Ask to see the drivers licence, and ensure the vehicle is registered and insured.
  • Discuss and confirm financial arrangements. It is customary for passengers to make a contribution towards petrol and related expenses, however, it is against the law for drivers to make a profit from carpooling. Agree on a fair contribution before your first ride.
  • Tell family or friends the details of your first journey with each new travel partner - who, when and where.
  • Don’t go ahead if the arrangement doesn’t feel right. If you have doubts, at any time or for any reason, simply don’t travel and make alternative arrangements. Trust your instincts.
  • Finally, make sure you notify your travel partner as soon as possible if you are sick or unable to travel on an arranged day. This will give you both time to make alternate arrangements.

REMEMBER
It’s OK to say no. Simply keep looking until you find a travel match that suits. If you meet and it doesn’t feel right, keep looking. If a problem arises within an existing carpooling arrangement, it’s OK to politely say you’d like to make alternative arrangements and look for another match.

All staff and students are responsible for their safety when coming to or leaving UTS. The university does not prescribe how a staff member or student travels to UTS.

Acknowledgement of Country

UTS acknowledges the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation and the Boorooberongal People of the Dharug Nation upon whose ancestral lands our campuses now stand. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.
