Inspired by some of the world’s great public spaces, the UTS Alumni Green creates a central meeting place for the university community, filled with new, student-focused spaces. The spaces range from a large grassed area in front of the new Vicki Sara Building to intimate garden ‘pods’ where staff and students can gather to socialise or study.

Alumni Green connects facilities across UTS’s Broadway precinct, both physically and visually, providing a convenient conduit for students travelling between buildings and a welcoming outdoor space at the heart of the campus.

Design features

Designed by landscape architects ASPECT Studios, Alumni Green consists of three distinct zones, each with its own character and opportunities.

Alumni Green has been designed with a host of sustainability features, including rainwater capture for irrigation, ‘green’ concrete that uses a waste product from power stations, sustainable timber decking and environmentally responsible steel from local sources. Find out more about Alumni Green's sustainability features.

The Garden provides a mini oasis of trees and plants, providing shade on sunny days. A range of seating options are available, ideal for study or socialising. The space also features outdoor ping pong tables for active leisure time..

The Heart, a large paved, open space located at the rear of Building 1, has been modelled after town squares, such as Federation Square in Melbourne and the Pompidou Centre’s forecourt in Paris. It is the ceremonial gathering space for students and visitors.

The Green is a 1200m² raised grass platform, providing a green roof for the Library Retrieval System (LRS) below and connecting Building 2 with the new Faculty of Science and Graduate School of Health Building. It is used for special events, as well as day-to-day activities for staff and students. The landscaped edges of the green provide informal seating areas, while a viewing ‘lens’ in one corner offers a glimpse down into the LRS below.
