UTS has developed a Pesticide Use Notification Plan for outdoor public spaces, in accordance with the requirements of the NSW Pesticides Regulation 2017. The plan applies to the UTS City Campus, which comprises a number of buildings and outdoor spaces in the Broadway, Ultimo and Haymarket precincts.

The plan aims to meet the community’s general right to know about pesticide applications made to outdoor public places owned or controlled by UTS, to allow community members to take action to avoid potential contact with pesticides, if they wish.

UTS pesticide use

UTS ensures that it uses appropriately licensed and competent pesticide contractors so that pesticides are applied to public places in a safe, responsible manner, minimising harm to the community and the environment.

The following information provides an overview of pesticide use in public places throughout the UTS campus. Where it is deemed appropriate, UTS will provide notification of pesticide applications using on-site signage in the affected areas. Please refer to the Pesticide Use Notification Plan for further details.

Programmed pesticide use

Programmed pesticide use at UTS includes spot treatment of weeds, spraying of lawn to treat weeds, fungus and some insects, spraying for cockroaches (Turners Lane only) and the use of bait stations for rats and termites (termite baits are not classed as poisonous). Application frequency varies from weekly through to annual depending on the pest.

Reactive and emergency pesticide use

Notification of reactive or emergency pesticide use will be posted where possible and appropriate. This includes dusting of rat holes if identified during inspections, use of granules for ant control, and treatment of other insect populations as required. Please refer to the Pesticide Use Notification Plan for further details.

Acknowledgement of Country

UTS acknowledges the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation and the Boorooberongal People of the Dharug Nation upon whose ancestral lands our campuses now stand. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.
