The Data Science internship subject gives students an opportunity to apply what they have learnt from their coursework in a workplace setting, experiencing how data science is conducted in a business or research environment.

Experiential and work-based learning empowers Master of Data Science and Innovation (MDSI) students to develop their professional identities, improving their understanding of the professional practice of data science. During their degrees, MDSI students have the option to undertake a data science internship with a host organisation. Examples of possible suitable placements for a data science internship include:

  • assisting on a research project
  • assisting on an analytical project of a given dataset
  • providing consultation service
  • supporting the work of a data science team.

Data science internships can be undertaken individually or, where appropriate, by a small team of MDSI students during Autumn or Spring semesters.

Upcoming dates

  • Spring 2024 – between 5 August and 1 November 2024
  • Autumn 2025 – between 17 February and 16 May 2025
  • Spring 2025- between 28 July- 24 October 2025

Internship placements can be between 100 - 200 hours (subject to course credit weighting); these hours can be completed part-time or full-time. Students must be supervised during their placement by a nominated internship supervisor from within the host organisation. This supervisor will support the student’s learning by setting tasks, providing feedback and offering guidance when needed. Internships can be on-site at the host organisation, remotely working from home (WFH), or a hybrid of both.

Organisations looking to host students for data science internships, need confirm placements with successful applicants, prior to subject start dates (ideally a minimum of two week prior). This is to allow time for all internship paperwork to be completed and internships to be approved for course credit.

We encourage host organisations to offer paid internships, where possible, as this makes your opportunity accessible for more students. Find out more about paid vs unpaid placements.

Centre for Work Health and Safety: Amplifying data science skills through work experience

The Centre for Work Health and Safety onboarded eight master’s students for a data science internship to explore an emerging problem in the industry. They encouraged the interns to collaborate and experiment to deliver outcomes that could inform future projects in the organisation.

Everyone had a keen interest to learn through the internship…not only working within their own team, but also supporting other team members in reaching the goals. And this is what brought out their [interns] leadership initiatives, the collaborative mindset and communication strategies.

– Dr Sazzad Hussain, Senior Research and Data Science Officer at Centre for Work Health and Safety NSW
