Professor Zee Upton is UTS’s Dean of the Faculty of Health. Professor Upton is an accomplished academic leader and research and innovation executive with deep experience in strategy, governance, commercialisation, industry partnerships and organisational transformation.
The Dean Faculty of Health key responsibilities are:
- Leading the implementation of the Faculty Strategic Plan identifying key focus areas that are aligned to the UTS Strategic Initiatives
- Leading the faculty in the focus areas of International, research, strengthening our Indigenous profile and people and culture
- Leading the strategic focus on partnership and collaboration within and external to the Health group and university, and
- Ensuring the business as usual is attended to in compliance with risk, health and safety, and equity and diversity.
Zee joined UTS in August 2026 as Dean of the Faculty of Health. Most recently, she was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) and the Pro Vice-Chancellor in the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle, where she remains an Honorary Professor.
A biochemist by training, Professor Upton has deep experience in medical biotechnology and cell biology and is a Member of the Australian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Before joining the University of Newcastle in 2021, Professor Upton held academic appointments and leadership roles at the Skin Research Institute of Singapore, A*STAR’s Institute of Medical Biology, Queensland University of Technology and CSIRO Human Nutrition. In these roles she grew national and international partnerships across academia, industry and government, strengthened commercialisation pipelines and oversaw strategy, research integrity and major organisational transformation.
Professor Upton holds a PhD in Biochemistry, a Bachelor of Science and First Class Honours in biochemistry all from the University of Adelaide.
