Judy Smith, nursing lecturer and perioperative nursing coordinator at the UTS Faculty of Health, has been awarded 'Nurse of the Year' at the Australian Healthcare Week Excellence Awards [opens external site].
This award recognises Australia and New Zealand’s most outstanding nurses who have demonstrated exceptional performance in patient care, education, leadership, research and administration. More specifically, Judy is acknowledged for her passion and commitment to teaching perioperative nursing students at UTS, particularly in the area of simulated learning.
Since taking over the coordinator role of perioperative nursing in 2017, Judy has made it her objective to offer authentic learning experiences for both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students.
“As perioperative nursing is very dynamic, performed in a complex environment and driven by advanced surgical techniques and highly sophisticated technical systems, I realised that for this to be successful, we need an environment that can capably simulate the perioperative setting. My goal for this environment is a space where students can engage in active learning with hands-on experiences in which they are able to witness the results of their actions in real time.”
Judy describes her accolade as being “very much a team award.”
“I was incredibly humbled, however, this award is not my award individually – I could not have achieved any of what I have without incredible support and partnership with colleagues, industry-based professionals and, most importantly, the students I have the privilege to teach. They drive me to do better every day, so they too can do their very best in caring for our patients.”
The Faculty of Health is proud to congratulate Judy on this outstanding achievement.
