Dr. Xi Forest Zhu has been announced recipient of an ARC Future Fellowship 2023 for the project, FT230100104: Wireless Integrated Circuits for the Era of 6G: System-in-a-Package.
Future wireless technologies that rely on high-speed, energy-efficient communication networks are expected to become ubiquitous over the coming decade and will be worth hundreds of billions of dollars globally. However, some foundation technologies, such as electronic integrated circuits, are currently still in their infancy and are too costly for mass production.
This project will produce innovative, low-cost electronic integrated circuits crucial for emerging applications, such as wireless links that will be up to 50 times faster than today. Adoption by the growing number of technology start-ups in electronic circuit design would allow Australian businesses to offer competitively priced and high-performing commercial products to massive, global markets, resulting in new job creation and new export income for Australia. End-user benefits are numerous, ranging from offices to schools, hospitals, homes, and road users.
Dr. Forest Zhu is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Electrical and Data Engineering and a core member of the Global Big Data Technologies Centre (GBDTC). As the Lead CI, he has secured three ARC Linkage Projects since 2020. He was named Australia’s top researcher in the field of Microelectronics and Electronic Packaging by The Australian 2023 Research Magazine and has made significant contributions by developing cutting-edge integrated circuits in advanced semiconductor technologies. This strong track record lays a solid foundation for the proposed FT project.
