Case study
Professor Emily Callander
Professor Callander, a Professor in Health Economics in the School, has led an economic evaluation of the real-world cost of implementing continuity of midwifery care in partnership with Gold Coast Health.
In addition to providing the economic evidence this hospital required to support the expansion of this model of care, the work also provided a open-source template for embedding economic analyses into routine service delivery in maternity care.
The work has subsequently been disseminated through the national peak body, Women’s Healthcare Australasia to all executives of maternity services. Maternity hospitals in Victoria (Royal Women’s) and Western Australia (King Edward Memorial) have subsequently sought collaboration to implement this approach.

The global grassroots phenomenon parkrun has achieved what public health advocates dream of: a sustainable, accessible and popular physical activity intervention suitable for any age that is demonstrably good for participants’ health.
parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5km run or walk which requires minimal infrastructure and is largely resourced through volunteers. It operates in 22 countries globally and has over 450 sites in Australia alone. Our project aims to identify mechanisms and principles of how this already successful scaled-up physical activity intervention is sustained and disseminated which can be applied to other public health interventions.
The investigator team includes members of the parkrun Australia and Global parkrun research Boards, a senior executive from NSW Ministry of Health and academics with expertise in physical activity and scaling up from the University of Technology Sydney, University of Sydney, University of Western Sydney, University of Tasmania and Amsterdam University Medical Centre.
The results from this unique project will provide translatable practice-based guidance co-produced by researchers, policymakers and practitioners working in partnership.
