The professional and economic future of community pharmacy lies in the provision of pharmaceutical services. The design, development, evaluation (clinical, economic, and humanistic) and implementation of these services are therefore critical for the evolution of the profession and improving patient care.
A hierarchical Model of Cognitive Pharmaceutical Services forms the basis for the research being undertaken. Research is streamed by the evolutionary position and type of service, and patient populations thus having a major impact on emergent professional and business models at a national and international level. The complex yet practically applicable interventions are designed, optimised and tested, using mixed methods research, with objectives of maximising patient outcomes, professional and business factors.
Current research is tracking the community pharmacy industry environment, the impact of services in order to sustain and gain remuneration, and trialling implementation models in various services including primary care, preventative services, adherence, medication management and disease state management in various populations. Through the research objectives the role of pharmacists and community pharmacy in the current and emergent health care system is being designed and influenced.
