Our impact evaluation shows that outcomes for students and mentors were positive including increases in confidence, awareness, networks and motivation.

Lucy mentoring mentees and mentors

Lucy Mentoring mentees were surveyed at the beginning and end of their mentorship journey to aid UTS in assessing the impact of the program. Likewise, mentors completed a post-program survey to reflect and provide feedback on the program. The survey was a digital form that was sent out to mentors and mentees separately.

Outcomes for mentees

Increased confidence

Increase in confidence graph

As well as self-reported increases in confidence, 97% of mentors agreed that their mentee’s confidence had increased

The Lucy Mentoring Program has had a profound impact on me in many ways, but most importantly it has helped me develop a higher sense of self-confidence. I went into the program not really knowing what my goals were, and while I cannot say I have a picture-perfect image of them even now, I am definitely a lot more confident in knowing what I value and how I can help myself achieve the things I want going forward. Through the invaluable guidance of my mentor and the amazing mentee community, the program has taught the importance of self-reflection and valuing myself above all other things.

Increased awareness of industry

Awareness 2021 Lucy Mentoring

As well as self-reported increases in awareness, 90% of mentors agreed that their mentee’s awareness of industry had increased and 97% of mentors agreed that their mentee’s self-awareness had increased.

Lucy Mentoring absolutely changed me. I thought I knew what I wanted in my career and was firm on staying in my comfort zone and not trying anything new, but my mentor showed me a career in a long-term perspective and what I can do today to get me there tomorrow.

Mentee 2021

Increased networks and motivation

Motivation and networks 2021 Lucy mentoring

80% of mentors agreed that their mentee’s motivation to pursue a career in engineering or IT had increased.

Before this experience I lacked the self-confidence and questioned whether I should continue my career in IT. But now I feel confident in my direction and know I have the ability to succeed.

Mentee, 2021

Career connections

  • 10 had received paid employment as a result of the program and 12 had received work experience
  • 29 had received a job interview as a result of the program
  • 33 had agreed to continue their mentoring relationships after the program
  • 44 had met with potential employers

My mentor has greatly supported me in my entry into the industry. I have gained first-hand experience of what it is like to work and encouraged me to actively seek any opportunities.

Outcomes for mentors

Mentors reported the following outcomes:

Satisfaction from giving back

"Felt good that I was able to give back to the community. I learned new ways of working, thinking and presenting from my mentee. Thank you!"

"I always love being part of these programs, it feels great to help the students and their energy and passion are infectious."

"Felt extremely engaged in the experience and really enjoyed being able to help my mentee."

An understanding of university students

“I always love hearing about new perspectives and especially from students undergoing an engineering degree now. Helps me to understand how things are changing, what they need, what I within my company can do for young talent."

"It was good for me to get an insight into how a top university in Australia is working with students for their overall development. This was interesting to see for me as I have moved to Australia for work and did not have a lot of understanding of Australia's higher education system. Also, finding female candidates for technical roles in engineering teams is a challenge in Australia. This is a good starting point to contribute to the solution of the problem."

Professional development as a mentor and increased professional networks

"There is always a new member of the team, this helps remind me how a newcomer feels and behaves and how the company and myself could assist them to check-in and be involved. Through encouraging my mentee, I also get inspiration and self-awareness on planning and considering my next steps."

"I improved my personal skills, particularly listening and providing feedback. I also met new people and expanded my professional network."

Personal development

"The opportunity to learn from someone else is always priceless. Our differences are what make us unique and it was amazing to be able to spend the time with young people so determined to become the very best version of themselves. Personally, I gained confidence too and learnt that you are never too old to dream :-)"

"I was able to gain my own confidence from sharing experiences and knowledge with my mentee."
