Designing for coastal resilience

Elizabeth Mossop

Designing for coastal resilience

A new anthology collated by UTS Professor Elizabeth Mossop explores the issue of effective design for coastal communities in the face of climate change. Called Sustainable Coastal Design and Planning, the project emerged from Mossop’s personal experience of Hurricane Katrina and the impacts of super storm Sandy, which wreaked billions of dollars’ worth of damage on America’s coastlines. As lead author, Mossop reflects on her previous research in the Coastal Sustainability Studio at Louisiana State University, in which she and colleagues worked to develop multidisciplinary solutions for communities exposed to the challenges and uncertainty of living near the ocean. Her work appears alongside essays from international experts across a range of professional disciplines, including engineering and science, who propose novel initiatives that sit beyond the traditional toolkit of coastal design.
