My approach to leadership here at Taronga Zoo has certainly been strengthened by doing the UTS Future Leaders Program.

There seems to be a very positive relationship between the UTS admin team and our Taronga admin team that have supported us through the program.

The UTS Taronga Partnership is about the delivery of a leadership program for some of its future leaders, and the program takes them through a series of workshops on leadership and also on strategic problem solving, and they develop the presentation skills and the leadership confidence to continue on into the future.

What is fantastic about upskilling existing people within the Taronga ecosystem is that we are a very complex organization.

We're a tourist attraction.

We're a conservation organization.

We need to get heads on beds in our accommodation.

We have two zoos.

A program like this is fantastic for us to be able to upskill people who've worked at the coalface who actually understand all those diverse needs of stakeholders and audiences that we have to manage at Taronga.

Seeing team members go through the course, I've seen them develop in their confidence in their skills, in their willingness to approach and tackle new problems, in their willingness to question and to ask questions and think outside of the area that they normally work.

And it's just been so rewarding to see that growth and personal development in those team members just really unlock that potential.

So for me, this program has changed my approach to leadership in terms of really segmenting into how do I lead myself, how do I lead others, including my team and my my organization, and how do I lead projects at Taronga to make sure that we are achieving our vision.

I think this program goes back in three ways.

The first way is obviously the the development of their leaders and not only that development, but the ripple effect of having leaders who have more tools and resources available and who understand leadership more broadly.

The second way this program gives back is you get staff working on strategic initiatives and goals that the organization often has been wanting to do and work on for quite a while.

And the third reason, the reason is the data and the insights that the program tends to be yield.

So whether it's from the evaluations or the general feedback or whether we're doing sort of any other type of data feedback and capture, we get that information and we're able to share that in a positive way for the organization to learn also about its leaders.

What really impressed me about the UTS team and their delivery is they came in and have really understood our business and what our needs are, understanding the types of markets that we work in.

And that means this programme, while its core academic base hasn't changed.

The delivery, the language and the methodologies that they've used, the examples that have used have made it really relevant for our team.

So of course, the enthusiasm of the participants and the understanding of how to apply the tools they've learnt has been really, really effective that

Taronga's on a real growth trajectory at the moment.

We're also entering really new complex markets and having our middle management group develop and think about these complex problems and be able to participate and have the right skill sets to be a part of.

That is the most powerful reason for me wanting to do this program with UTS.

One of the key aspects that says the Taronga Zoo program apart from other programs, is the enthusiasm and the motivation that the participants brought into this program.

So they really, truly embraced what we were working with them on.

They asked us to provide more examples to give them more opportunities to practice.

And they just truly love the opportunity to grow and develop.

I think the depth of the program is something that's really impressed me.

You know, leadership, it's, it's multifaceted.

There's so many different pieces to it, such a deep and rich body of knowledge there that the team have been provided with, delivered by experts from UTS.

It's been a fantastic experience, fantastic program.

I'd recommend this program to any organization that wants to develop leadership within their organization.

When you've got your own team members that understand all the different machinations that make this place work to give them those leadership skills, it's just such a beautiful thing and such a wonderful thing for our organisation.

We've got some really talented leaders there.

They've probably just needed a few of those tools to understand how to unlock their potential.

And I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone who's thinking about developing leadership within their organisation.

I've spoken to a lot of people about the Future Leaders program since starting it, and one thing I always say is apply if you get the chance.

When I first saw the ad for it, I thought I'm too busy, can't fit it in, but it's been one of the best things I've done.

Life's always busy. It's never gonna be a good time, but at the same point, it's always the right time.

How we create impact

Connect with Country

When passion for Country meets passion for upskilling with impact: The Journey of the “Connect with Country” app.

Incorporating Acknowledgement of Country at a meeting or an event provides us with an opportunity to show respect for the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we are working.

Yet many of us have a limited understanding of this important practice and lack confidence that we are doing it correctly. This can diminish the power of the acknowledgement and the respect and appreciation we try to convey through it.
