Our academics provide excellent supervision for graduate research degrees in various disciplines.

At the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, our academics provide excellent supervision for graduate research degrees in various disciplines, organised under four course areas. Many of our academics also specialise in supervising interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research projects.

We provide a highly supportive environment for research degree students including research training through our inclusive and highly-rated module on Academic Research Practices. Our supervisors have won university-level UTS Vice Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence in graduate research supervision in 2020 (Dr. Bhuva Narayan) and 2021 (Dr. Ilaria Vanni).

Communication

Intellectual enquiry and creative and digital literacies are the foundation of our postgraduate research degrees. Our supervisors are world leaders in the field of communication, combining traditional academic pursuits with hands-on industry experience in the area of  Social and Political Sciences, Climate Justice, Indigenous Land Justice, Aboriginal Political History, Public History, Public Communication, Creative Writing, Media Arts and Production, Music and Sound Design, Journalism, Digital Social Media. 

This means they’re delivering research that responds directly to real-world challenges — and they’ll work with you to make sure yours does too. Whether you’re looking for master’s research or doctoral-level study in a creative or traditional field, we can help you shape your intellectual passions into a project that counts.

Criminology

UTS Criminology seeks to advance applied and translational criminology, criminal justice, policing and community safety research, providing evidence based outputs that inform both policy and practice.  

Our award winning criminology researchers have global reach and impact as well as having a rich history in the delivery of research projects, including that of student projects, with many student completions to date.  UTS Criminology offers a contemporary and innovative research environment that aims to make a real world difference that contributions to professional practice and public safety.  

Key areas of interest and expertise include (but not limited to): Law Enforcement & Policing; Offender Management & Rehabilitation; Violence & Aggression; Digital Criminology; Geographical Profiling; Emergency and Disaster Management; Crime Prevention and Quantitative Criminology.

International Studies

International Studies provides an enriching and supportive environment for higher degree research in a diverse range of academic areas, including linguistics, teaching and learning, social sciences, political science, cultural studies, urban studies, country and area studies, gender studies, classroom innovation, and more. Our multi-award winning academic supervisors include leading scholars with an international reputation in their fields.

Our key research areas are:

  • Cities in Asia including China and Hong Kong on general topics of space and place, governance and territory, urban economy and local industry, and politics of culture/cultures of politics.
  • Languages education | Intercultural language learning
  • Studies of cultures, languages and societies with a focus on transcultural, translingual and transnational processes resulting from colonialism and globalization in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, Singapore and Philippines.
