Pre-arrival checklist

Before you can join us in beautiful Sydney, Australia, there are a few things you need to do.

    Get a visa

    Most international students will need a student visa to study in Australia. Read our visa guide and apply via the Department of Home Affairs.

    Find accommodation

    You'll want to arrange accommodation in Sydney before you arrive. There are a few accommodation types to choose from:

    • On-campus accommodation
    • Student accommodation
    • Private rental
    • Homestay

    Get health insurance

    To ensure you can access essential care while you’re here, you’ll need to arrange Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

    OSHC is a special type of private health insurance designed just for ​​international students. Most OSHC policies cover you for:

    • doctor (GP) visits
    • ambulance costs
    • some hospital treatments
    • some prescription medications (pharmaceuticals).

    You must have OSHC cover for the entire time you’re in Australia.

    Pack for an adventure of a lifetime!

    Here are some tips on what to bring with you to Sydney.

    • Important documents: bring your passport and printed copies of your student visa, flight itinerary, OSHC and Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
    • Study gear: laptop and stationery.
    • Essential tech: mobile phone, charging cables, headphones – and don’t forget your adaptor!
    • Toiletries: bring a few small essentials, like toothpaste and a toothbrush. You can buy the rest when you arrive.
    • Clothes: Sydney’s weather is usually warm, but don’t forget to bring a jumper or two for the colder months! And remember: Australia is in the southern hemisphere, so our seasons may be opposite to yours!
