• Course description

  This course is designed for those aspiring to become clinical psychologists. It provides a blend of practical experience and research-based education. It integrates on-campus and online learning, which is complemented by both on-campus and external clinical placements.

  The industry relevance of the course is ensured by the teaching staff who are all practicing clinical psychologists. Robust clinical skills, are acquired and honed through their expert supervision in our state-of-the-art university clinic and diverse external placements, preparing you for a wide range of areas of clinical psychology practice. Learning occurs through a mix of practical and theoretical methods, fostering a comprehensive understanding of clinical psychology.

  The course offers training in professional practice as a clinical psychologist. Uniquely, all academic staff are also experienced, currently practicing clinical psychologists. Through expert supervision in the university clinic, as well as on external placements, students develop strong clinical skills applicable to a wide range of clinical psychology areas of practice.

• Clinical placement

  Students experience a diverse range of clinical placement opportunities. You’ll complete a minimum of 1,000 placement hours over the two year program. These hours encompass face to face consultations with patients, supervision hours, and clinical activities.

  You’ll gain practical experience during four clinical placements. You will complete two placements within the internal UTS psychology training clinic, and two external placements in hospital, community health and private practice settings. Each placement is 2 days per week for 18 – 24 weeks, running from mid-January to mid-June and mid-July to mid-December (extending beyond session dates).

  The course adopts a Scientist-Practitioner model with an emphasis on cognitive-behavioural approaches. You will also be trained in other approaches, such as family therapy, mindfulness-integrated cognitive behaviour therapy, schema therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, and motivational interviewing among others.

  The first two placements for all students will be undertaken in the custom-built, state of the art, multidisciplinary, on-campus UTS Psychology Clinic under the supervision of established and endorsed Clinical Psychologists. The UTS Psychology Clinic is located at 100 Broadway in the Sydney CBD and is open to the community.

  You’ll complete over half of your placement hours at external placement sites in a range of key settings including hospital, specialist and private practices. You may be allocated placements in key areas such as: adult mental health, child and family health, sexual health, oncology, rehabilitation, drug and alcohol. You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss with the Placement Coordinator the areas of work that you are interested in.

  External placements are generally sourced for you by our Clinical Placement Coordinator utilising our wide network of connections with NSW Health, Non-Government Organisations, Private Hospitals, and other clinical facilities. 

  Occasionally you may consult with the Placement Coordinator about sourcing your own clinical placement (around a particular area of interest or location, for example), but most students prefer to take advantage of provided placements as these sites are carefully selected to provide opportunity for high quality clinical work under the supervision of highly experienced board-approved field supervisors.

• Course duration

  This course is offered on a two-year, full-time basis. Students are not permitted to enrol part time.

• Admission requirements

  To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

  Applicants must have the following:

  • Completed Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited Level 1 and Level 2 program in psychology within the last 10 years with at least an upper second class Honours (H2A) or equivalent overall mark AND a minimum GPA of 5.8/7 AND a period of at least 6 months of relevant professional work experience in mental health.

  Applications and eligibility for interview are assessed based on academic performance, a period of at least 6 months of relevant professional work experience in mental health, and academic and professional references. To be eligible, all applicants must attend an in-person selection interview at the UTS Broadway City campus. The only exception is for offshore international applicants, who may interview online. With a limited number of interviews available, only selected competitive applicants will be invited to interview. At interview, applicants are assessed on their knowledge of research, clinical training, and ethical practice as well as their interpersonal effectiveness and suitability for clinical practice. Final offers are ranked on interview performance.

  Notes about qualifications:

  • Applicants must be eligible for provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia
  • Psychology qualifications from overseas must be assessed by the Australian Psychological Society (APS) as equivalent to a 4-year APAC accredited sequence of study in psychology. The degree must include a major research thesis component. The APS does not assess psychology qualifications for the purpose of registration, and an additional assessment will be required by the Psychology Board of Australia for this purpose.
  • For completed Level 2 degrees, if not stated on their transcript, applicants must provide a letter from their program coordinator to confirm their equivalent honours class and overall honours mark (Weighted Average Mark – WAM).
  • For active Level 2 degrees, applicants must provide an official academic transcript showing enrolment in subjects in their final session.

  Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application

  • All official academic transcript(s)
  • Two (2) references, one academic and one professional submitted via the Psychology Reference Portal and shared with UTS, as follows:
    • Referees should clearly state their organisational relationship to the applicant, current position, and employer.
    • The professional referee must have directly supervised the applicant's professional work experience in mental health, as outlined on their resume.
    • The academic reference must be completed by the honours research supervisor or coordinator to account for the applicant's ability to write, undertake research and respond to research supervision.
    • Indigenous applicants are welcome to submit cultural and/or community referees to accompany their application.
  • Resume: Demonstrating at least six months of relevant paid or volunteer professional work experience in mental health (at the time of application). Relevant professional work experience must involve direct client contact with clinical populations. This may include telephone or face to face counselling, research or research assistant roles, mental health support work, disability support work, clinically relevant work in a private practice, or with an ABA service. This experience should include tasks related to clinical practice (e.g. intake, referral, test scoring, report writing etc). Experience limited solely to administrative duties in a mental health or academic setting is not considered relevant (e.g., clinic receptionist).
    • Must provide a professional reference and resume as evidence of at least six months of relevant professional work experience in mental health.
    • The names of both the academic and professional referees submitted with the application must be listed on the resume.

  Professional and clinical requirements

  Prior to enrolling into, or at enrolment in this course, all successful applicants are required to:

  • obtain registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA) as a provisionally registered psychologist
  • acquire a Working With Children Check and an Australian National Police Check
  • complete a series of NSW Health forms including a Code of Conduct
  • demonstrate evidence of protection against a number of specified infectious diseases

  As a postgraduate student, you'll be responsible for covering your own tuition fees.

  • Indicative first-year tuition fee:  $43,900.00
  • Indicative total tuition fee:  $89,556.00

  You can choose to pay your fees upfront per session, or if you’re eligible, you can defer them using a government FEE-HELP loan. This loan helps you cover all or part of your tuition fees. Keep in mind that applications for this loan are specific to each course.

  Additional Costs 

  Your tuition fees do not include:

  • The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which supports student services and activities. If eligible, you can defer this fee using SA-HELP.
  • Textbooks, materials, and other course-related costs.
  • Any applicable payment processing fees (e.g., credit card surcharges).

  Information for Masters by Research students: Government-funded scholarship places available

  As a recipient of the Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarship, you do not have to pay tuition fees for up to the maximum period of candidature. However, even with this scholarship, you should expect ongoing costs that aren’t covered, like travel, training, and professional development. These costs can vary for each person, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Additionally, scholarships are available to help with your living expenses.

• Inherent requirements

  Inherent requirements are academic and non-academic requirements that are essential for successfully completing a course at UTS. You can find the inherent requirements for your course via the inherent requirements directory.

• Professional recognition

  The Master of Clinical Psychology provides the fifth and sixth year of study required to register as a psychologist in Australia. Graduates are eligible, following two years of supervised practice (external to the university), for endorsement as a clinical psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) and full membership of the Australian Psychological Society, College of Clinical Psychologists, and/or the Australian Clinical Psychology Association.

  The UTS program has full accreditation by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC).

• Important notes

  Applications for 2026 Intake have now closed (no mid year intake). Applications for 2027 Intake (Autumn B session) will open around August 2026.

  It is recommended to apply early, as applications and eligibility for interview will be assessed on a rolling basis. Entry is highly competitive and assessment is based on Grade Point Average (GPA), at least six months of relevant experience in mental health, academic and professional references and personal statement. Selected competitive applicants will be invited to interview through September, October and November. Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee an interview or offer of a place. 

  Indigenous applicants will be contacted by the Professor of Practice in Indigenous Health.  

  Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) are not available for this course, however, eligible domestic students may be apply for FEE-HELP. 

  Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is not accepted for this course.
