The Perceptual Imaging Lab (πLab) works with Industry and Government to develop technologies to improve on the perceived quality and user experience of modern imagery, particularly in the emerging domains of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and 3D imaging.
Overview
Driven by key external partnerships, πLab’s goal is to create new technologies to solve current industry problems and open new markets in the areas of:
- 3D scanning technologies
- Perception science applied to Big Data visualisation
- Perception science applied to medical innovations
- Perception science applied to education and cultural heritage
- Perceptual imaging for virtual reality and augmented reality
- Computer vision to allow machines to understand the visual environment
- Optics and light propagation
- Health
The πLab team are growing and have expertise in the areas of 3D scanning, colour, psychophysics, image and signal processing, machine learning, human vision and perception, affective computing, machine learning and optics.
Our team are highly industry focused with a combined experience of over 40 years working on image processing and perceptual quality for companies and organisations such as Canon, Phillips, Defence Science and Technology Group and the CSIRO. We bring this experience to bear on the research we conduct to ensure its relevance to society.

UTS-VNU Joint Technology and Innovation Research Centre (JTIRC)
PILab is a supporter of the UTS-VNU Joint Technology and Innovation Research Centre (JTIRC) and other engagements with Vietnam
- Multiple presentations in Vietnam to promote the VR Research within the JTIRC
- Co-supervision of three PhD students from VNU Hanoi
- Hosted the visit of A/Prof Thanh Nguyen from VNU Hanoi in August 2019
- Hosted the visit of Dr Thuy Nguyen from RMIT Vietnam in February 2023
- Discussions with MAAS, Vsmart, AIC Group and Samsung Vietnam and other groups regarding opportunities for collaboration in Vietnam
