Chronic cognitive neural diseases – assessment, prediction, and treatment
Clinical research
The usefulness of EEG with advanced sensing technology and state-of-the-art machine-learning algorithms supports people with brain healthcare needs in various chronic cognitive neural diseases such as those shown in the right graph, as the disorders lead to negative performance in the daily life. For example, the proposed system for managing the headache detection system can notify migraine patients’ imminent migraine headaches hours in advance; the depression treatment screening system can evaluate and predict the efficacy of rapid antidepressant agents. The use of dry electrodes under EEG recording is the easy and rapid monitoring on an everyday basis.
Migraine assessment and prediction
Migraine is a disabling disorder, characterized by recurrent headaches, particularly prevalent in developed countries. The abnormal functioning of the migrainous brain between, before and during attacks, reflected by EEG patterns, facilitates the detection of imminent migraine headaches hours in advance and helps in monitoring the effects of therapeutic interventions. An effective treatment for migraine attacks is to take preventive medications. The severity of headaches can be significantly reduced and their duration shortened by the use of preventive medications before attacks. Our proposed EEG-based migraine system could figure out the fundamental patterns that can be used to distinguish the EEG activity of the inter-ictal phase from that of the pre-ictal phase.
Depression treatment
Depression is a disorder of the affective system with a lifetime prevalence in the general population of approximately 13% in men and 21 % in women. The frontal EEG asymmetric distribution of positive and negative emotions in the prefrontal cortex may have important implications for the diagnosis and treatment of depression. EEG signals can be used to guide the development of personalized medicine, including the selection of an appropriate dose, and optimal therapies. Our proposed EEG-based depressed assessment system features frontal EEG power and asymmetry to help patients to evaluate and predict the effects of treatment using antidepressants (e.g. ketamine).
