AAII’s Director, Distinguished Professor Jie Lu AO, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Australia Day 2023 Honours List.

The Order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement. Jie Lu has received this honour from the Governor-General for her “distinguished service to engineering and computer science, particularly through the research and development of artificial intelligence.”

Distinguished Professor Jie Lu’s prolific research record, including being awarded an Australian Laureate Fellow, IEEE Fellow and IFSA Fellow, are among the many accomplishments of her research career. Jie Lu’s ground-breaking research excellence in computational intelligence has huge positive implications for Australia’s society and economy.

Jie Lu’s fundamental contributions, particularly in fuzzy transfer learning, concept drift, data-driven decision support systems, and recommender systems, is helping shape the way organisations use data to make decisions in complex and uncertain situations.

Distinguished Professor Jie Lu AO is the first UTS academic to be awarded an ARC Laureate Fellowship. The project will enhance autonomous machine learning for data-driven decision-making across multiple industries, promising to benefit Australia's economy, health and society.

Effective prediction and decision making deliver direct benefits to industry and the community by increasing economic activity and helping organisations to manage risk. Jie Lu has applied her expertise and theoretical innovation in this field in industry collaborations across a wide range of sectors, including transportation, telecommunications, health care and education.

Her projects include partnerships with Optus, Sydney Trains, Domain Holdings, Australia Ltd, Workforce Health Assessors and 23Strands, developing and implementing intelligent recommender systems and data-driven decision support systems.

She has presented 40 keynote or plenary addresses at IEEE WCCI, SMC and other conferences; received 10 ARC Discovery Projects and one Linkage Project (all as first CI), and 20 grant projects from government and industry; has a career total of 500+ publications on AI theories and applications with 19,400+ citations and with an h-index of 73 (Google Scholar). She has received many other awards, including “Outstanding Paper Award of IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems” in both 2019 and 2022.

The Governor-General congratulated the outstanding Australians recognised in the 2023 Honours List.

“The recipients have had a significant impact at the local, national and international level and are, quite simply, inspiring. They go above and beyond, are from all over the country, and contribute every day in every way imaginable,” the Governor-General said.

Alongside Jie Lu, there were a total of 47 appointments as Officers of the Order in 2023 Australia-wide. The Governor-General’s office recognises these individuals for their distinguished service of a high degree to Australia or to humanity at large.
