Getting Started in Evaluation

Evaluation is a valuable tool in improving the quality of program delivery and outcomes. This evaluation course will introduce you to the basics needed to undertake or manage evaluations.

This course is designed for Professionals seeking a general understanding of evaluation.

Course content

You will gain the applied knowledge and skills to evaluate programs and projects. Led by an academic practitioner with extensive experience designing and conducting evaluations, these live online sessions will allow for real-time interaction between the presenter and participants, encouraging deep discussion and analysis of the course content.

The course will cover the following topics:

  1. The big picture and how to put it together
  2. Clarifying your program outcomes
  3. From outcomes to indicators
  4. Developing a logic model
  5. Developing key evaluation question

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand broad approaches and frameworks for evaluation.
  • Understand the major elements that go into an evaluation plan.
  • Articulate clear program outcomes and select indicators to measure them.
  • Understand different approaches to presenting program logics.
  • Specify Key Evaluation Questions and break these down into sub-questions.

Delivery style

The evaluation course will be delivered online via Zoom. Course materials, presentation notes and readings will be made available to participants prior to the first session.

This course is designed for professionals seeking a general understanding of evaluation. It is suitable for people who will be conducting, managing or commissioning evaluations.

About the presenters

Duncan Rintoul

Duncan Rintoul is an Associate of IPPG and Director of Rooftop Social: a research and evaluation firm specialising in facilitation and capacity building. Duncan has over 20 years’ consulting experience across a broad range of policy areas, ; including education, justice, human services, health and urban affairs. He works with a diverse mix of government agencies and NGOs and teaches executive education programs for both the Australian Evaluation Society (AES) and Australian Market and Social Research Society. Between 2015-19, Duncan initiated and lead evaluation capacity-building projects in the NSW Department of Education.

Edwina Deakin

Edwina Deakin is currently an Associate Director, Research and Advisory at the UTS Institute for Public Policy and Governance. She is the Project Manager and a lead author of the new IPPG Community Engagement for Impact Guide.

Edwina has been involved in commissioning, designing and delivering community engagement activities for over 25 years - as a NSW government policy director, social policy consultant and community engagement trainer. Edwina has worked with a wide range of organisations - undertaking over 30 major consultation projects: including various state-wide and local government area engagement activities. Edwina holds BA Honours degree, a Masters in Communications, Graduate Diploma in Education, and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
