Joel Tozer
Bachelor of Communication (Journalism), 2012
Joel Tozer is one of Australia’s most decorated young journalists, known for his fearless investigative reporting and leadership in current affairs. As Executive Producer of the ABC’s 7.30, Joel leads one of the country’s most respected nightly news programs, shaping national conversations through powerful storytelling and rigorous journalism.
A Walkley Award-winning journalist, Joel produced journalism for 60 Minutes, Four Corners, SBS’s Dateline, and international outlets including The New Yorker. His work has exposed far-right extremism, corruption, and systemic failures across industries—from neo-Nazi networks to the gambling and cosmetic surgery sectors. His 2022 exposé on neo-Nazi groups in Australia earned him two Walkley Awards and led to national recognition of far-right extremism as a terrorist threat.
Joel’s career began at UTS, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) in 2012. He also studied foreign reporting at the University of Helsinki.
His early promise was recognised with the Walkley Young Journalist of the Year award in 2014. Since then, Joel has received multiple Kennedy Awards, a Melbourne Press Club Quill, and international honours including a Gold World Medal from the New York Television and Film Awards.
Joel’s work continues to shape public discourse and policy, and his leadership at 7.30 ensures that critical issues remain in the spotlight.
UTS gave me the tools and the courage to chase stories that matter. It was where I learned crucial practical skills that I put into practice every day in my journalism – always with a focus on holding power to account and giving voice to those who are rarely heard.
