Designed for aged care, built for impact

As workforce challenges and expectations continue to evolve across the aged care sector, providers are increasingly seeking development opportunities that deliver real-world value. 

Recognising this need, the Institute for Public Policy and Governance (IPPG) at the University of Technology Sydney partnered with Leigh Place Aged Care to develop a leadership course for registered nurses and key staff. Created in response to the facility's specific priorities, the course was designed around the realities of aged care, ensuring participants could see themselves, their challenges and their opportunities reflected throughout the learning experience. 

Drawing on IPPG's expertise in professional learning and development, the course combined evidence-informed leadership frameworks with the challenges facing today's aged care workforce. The Institute developed a learning experience aligned to the facility's goals and the capabilities needed in a complex care environment. 

Participants quickly connected with the practical nature of the training and the engaging format allowing participants to actively contribute to discussions and apply ideas to their own workplace challenges. 

Delivered across two interactive workshops, the course explored adaptive leadership, emotional intelligence, communication, decision-making, conflict management and psychological safety. Through realistic scenarios, practical exercises and peer discussion, participants focused on skills to lead multidisciplinary teams, navigate uncertainty and foster positive workplace cultures. 

The course highlights IPPG's ability to work alongside clients to design professional development training that reflects their objectives, workforce needs and operating environment. From local government and public sector agencies to community organisations and aged care providers, the Institute partners with organisations to deliver practical learning that supports meaningful change.
