The achievements of electrical engineer Edward Dunn have inspired a transformational gift for UTS students.
The Eleanor Dunn Scholarship in Engineering is empowering students to overcome disadvantage and pursue excellence in their chosen field.
Edward ‘Ted’ Dunn was a visionary in electrical engineering, building a remarkable career from humble beginnings.
The founder of Standard Components and co-founder of Greenwich Marine Electronics (GME), Ted started out reconditioning TV tuners in his parents’ backyard. Five years later, he was producing amplifiers that enabled a better TV signal in rural and remote areas.
At GME, Ted branched out into radio communications where he oversaw the production of Australia’s first emergency position indicating radio beacon, an essential component of maritime search and rescue.
These quiet but groundbreaking achievements have shaped Australian life for more than 60 years. Today, Ted’s influence on the engineering profession lives on through the Eleanor Dunn Scholarship in Engineering at UTS.
Generosity that ignites possibility
Established by Ted’s wife, Eleanor, and the Dunn Family Trust, the scholarship honours Ted’s life and work by nurturing the future engineers who will follow in his footsteps. Since its launch in 2014, it has supported 12 UTS students to chart their own engineering paths.
Every year, the scholarship provides tuition and stipend support for a talented undergraduate student. The award has a particular focus on those facing financial or other disadvantage who can demonstrate their motivation to succeed.
We want to support people who are striving to achieve. It’s always been about trying to help people help themselves.
A springboard to success
Scholarship recipient and final-year student Sandra George is making the most of every opportunity. Supported by her 2020 award, she has built a remarkable degree experience that included representing UTS at an international conference, securing two internships and co-developing an AI-powered medical imaging solution.
The scholarship funds helped relieve pressures associated with university study, giving Sandra the time and space to immerse herself in engineering’s possibilities. But it was the scholarship’s investment in her potential that will power her future in the field.
