The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has become the first university in NSW to join the international ARRI Certified Film School Program.

Partnering with ARRI, a global player within the motion picture and live entertainment industries, UTS is offering an industry certified ARRI ALEXA camera systems subject for the first time this semester as part of the Faculty of Design and Society’s Screen Arts and Production course.

Developed with ARRI Academy education resources, this new UTS subject brings internationally recognised industry training directly into the classroom. Students will work hands-on with ARRI ALEXA camera systems and learn the professional workflows and on-set protocols used across feature films, high-end television and premium streaming productions.

Two individuals focus intently on a professional camera setup in the UTS Bon Marche Studio, with a spotlight in the background, creating a concentrated atmosphere.

For students, the benefit is clear. They are building practical skills on the same camera equipment and systems they will encounter in the creative industries. The subject strengthens UTS’s long-standing focus on practice-led teaching and learning in the screen arts.

Professor Rachel Landers, Head of Media Arts and Production, Animation Production, and Music and Sound Design, School of Communication said the partnership reflects the university’s commitment to aligning curriculum with creative industry needs.

Working with ARRI gives our students access to the tools and workflows that define professional screen production today. It means they graduate not only creatively ambitious, but confident operating in real production environments from day one.

The introduction of an ARRI Certified Film School subject positions UTS amongst a select group of institutions worldwide to integrate this level of industry training into a screen degree.  It also reinforces the Faculty of Design and Society’s commitment to partner with the creative industries.

“ARRI is proud to welcome UTS into the ARRI Certified Film School Program,” said Harald Schernthaner, Vice President, Product Management Camera Systems ARRI Group.

“UTS’s strong commitment to practice‑led education and its integration of industry‑standard production workflows make it an exceptional partner. By giving students direct, hands‑on experience with our ALEXA camera systems, UTS is ensuring that emerging filmmakers enter the industry with the skills, confidence, and technical understanding demanded by today’s professional productions.”

As the creative economy continues to grow, demand for technically skilled, adaptable graduates is increasing. This new subject ensures UTS students are prepared to meet that demand with capability, confidence, a clear understanding of global production standards, and an ARRI certification on their resumé.
