The newly appointed Chair of the national Climate Change Authority returns to his alma mater to advance Australia’s transition to net zero.

UTS alumnus the Hon Matt Kean has been made an Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where he will work within the Institute for Sustainable Futures and UTS Business School.

Kean’s honorary appointment comes as the former NSW Treasurer and Minister for Energy and Environment settles into his new role as Chair of the national Climate Change Authority.

Being appointed to that role by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese speaks to Kean’s ongoing dedication to progressing Australia’s decarbonising transition and his contribution to public policy in the areas of climate action and environmental sustainability.

At UTS, Kean will engage with the university’s expertise in climate change mitigation and adaptation, using his professional standing and connections to broadly promote this work among policymakers, industry and the community.

It will be a thrill for me to enhance and amplify the work of UTS and explore ways its research can inform that of the [Climate Change] Authority’s.

The Hon Matt Kean

Kean is excited to use his UTS position to advocate for change-making research, which is aligned with his mission at the Climate Change Authority.

“It’s a great honour for me to accept the appointment to become a UTS Adjunct Professor,” says Kean.

“Climate change is only one of the challenges our society faces but it is likely to be a defining one. At the Climate Change Authority, we are striving to plot the pathways that can generate new opportunities as we adapt to a decarbonising economy here and abroad.”

It will be a thrill for me to enhance and amplify the work of UTS and explore ways its research can inform that of the Authority’s.”

Kean’s return to UTS as Adjunct Professor also signals the university’s reinforced commitment to sustainability for which it is ranked #13 in the world by The Times Higher Education in 2024.

Professor Stuart White, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Futures says, “We are delighted to welcome Matt Kean back to UTS in this Adjunct Professor role. He has been a tireless and consistent proponent of the view that the renewable energy transition will provide benefits in terms of the economy and jobs, as well as the climate.

“This Adjunct Professor role reflects the fact that UTS has placed the climate change issue front and centre in its research, education, engagement and operations.”
