Distinguished Professor Jie Lu and her team are leveraging AI to revolutionise personalised medicine in collaboration with biomedical startup 23Strands.

Distinguished Professor Jie Lu, an Australian Laureate Fellow and Director of the Australian Artificial Intelligence Institute (AAII), is at the forefront of AI innovation.

Collaborating with biomedical startup 23Strands, Professor Lu and her team are developing machine learning platforms to revolutionise personalised medicine, which could include predictive tools for early disease detection and more effective personalised treatments.

Their strong partnership began with an awarded ARC Linkage Project in 2021. Since then, the teams have been applying machine-learning techniques to improve early prediction of infertility and cardiovascular disease and advance personalised treatment.

One key outcome of the partnership is BiblioEngine, an AI-powered tool that rapidly analyses and utilise vast scientific literature around particular diseases to provide genomics-informed medical recommendations. Looking ahead, they aim to implement the use of AI agents to serve as recommendation engines.

Together, AAII and 23Strands are working to usher in a new era of personalised medicine — using artificial intelligence to tailor treatments for individuals based on their genetic code or genome. This healthcare revolution is paving the way to reach more patients, more efficiently and at a lower cost.
