Smart Irrigation Management for Parks and Cool Towns (SIMPaCT) has been nominated for the peak global award for smart city projects.
The Smart Irrigation Management for Parks and Cool Towns (SIMPaCT) project, which focused on using smart technology to manage the irrigation of Sydney's Olympic Parklands, has been officially announced as a finalist in the World Smart City Awards.
These internationally acclaimed prizes, hosted by the Smart City Expo World Congress, recognise and support projects that can make an impact on citizens’ lives and turn our cities into better places to live.
The expo convenes a global audience of smart city professionals, providing an unparalleled opportunity to share innovative work with the world and gain international recognition.
SIMPaCT is a collaborative effort delivered by the Institute for Sustainable Futures (ISF) in partnership with the NSW Government, Sydney Water, Sydney Olympic Park, Monash and Western Sydney universities, and industry representatives.
The project demonstrates how smart water management can ease the pressure on our most valuable natural resource. It is Australia’s largest smart green infrastructure project and a major leap forward in the development of heat-responsive urban design.
It demonstrates the usefulness of AI when applied for the public good, which is one of our aims in ISF’s smart cities research.

The awards have received 411 top-level proposals from 63 countries. This international recognition demonstrates the success of SIMPaCT and the importance of using technology to address the urban heat island effect.

SIMPaCT has really great potential for addressing difficult urban problems of maintaining healthy landscapes using less water, and providing quality cool spaces for recreation and respite.”

The results will be unveiled on 8 November 2023 in Barcelona.
