Professor Faye McMillan to join Faculty of Health

Joining the Faculty of Health in October 2022 is Professor Faye McMillan AM, a Wiradjuri yinaa (woman), community pharmacist, powerful advocate for improving Indigenous health care, and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) 2022 Pharmacist of the year.

Professor Faye McMillan AM is a Wiradjuri yinaa (woman) originally from Trangie, NSW. She is a dedicated community pharmacist and is recognised as the first Indigenous Australian to hold a western degree in pharmacy in this country.

Professor McMillan is a strong advocate for improving Indigenous health care across professions and is a founding member and past chair of Indigenous Allied Health Australia. She is currently one of two Deputy National Rural Health Commissioners, a board member of The Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) and the chair of the APC Indigenous health strategy group.

A highly accomplished women, she has received numerous accolades for her leadership and contribution to population health, education, equity, and the community. In 2019 she was named the NSW Aboriginal Woman of the year; 2022 & 2017 she was recognised in the Who's Who of Australian Women; and in 2014 she was included in the Australian Financial Review’s 100 Women of Influence.

In 2021 Professor McMillan was appointed as a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, recognised for her significant service to Indigenous mental health, and to tertiary education.

This year, she was named the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) (opens external website) Pharmacist of the year (opens external website), recognised for her commitment to community pharmacy, rural and remote communities, and for her work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. This includes her work as part of the writing team, preparing the guidelines for pharmacists supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with medicines management.

Professor McMillan holds a Doctor of Health Science, Master of Indigenous Health, Master of Social Change Leadership, B. Pharm, Grad Cert Wiradjuri Language, Culture and Heritage, Grad Cert Indigenous Governance, Grad Cert Education, Dip Counselling, Cert IV Training and Assessment and is a Senior Fellow Higher Education Academy and Lifelong Atlantic Fellow for Social.

We are thrilled to have Professor Faye McMillan join the UTS Faculty of Health as Professor of Indigenous Health within the School of Public Health. She will be teaching and researching, while also continuing her important work as Deputy National Rural Health Commissioner.
