My first year experience studying Genetic Counselling

Hear from Master of Genetic Counselling student Courtney about her experience so far.

I am in the first cohort for the Master of Genetic Counselling program at the University of Technology Sydney, which uses a blended learning model! It means that for this program there are some “on-campus” blocks, but most of the course is completed online through video conferencing.

Accessibility

The model makes it possible for those who are not able to attend the campus at UTS on a full-time basis to still have the opportunity to study.  It provides everyone with the flexibility to work around their schedules and maintain other obligations like jobs, volunteer work, or family commitments. In my case, the ability to study while living in Brisbane has made my dream of becoming a genetic counsellor possible!

The online classroom

I do not miss the classroom! We use the online video conferencing program Zoom, which allows me to see and interact with my classmates and lecturers during classes. It is engaging, and it makes me feel as though I am in the same room as everyone else. On top of this, our professors are always available to help, through email, and zoom if I need to chat.

Connections

The genetic counselling program has a large component of clinical, and research placements. I have had the opportunity to meet and work with the professionals in my field, allowing me to learn from the best, and identify my potential career pathways! In addition, there is a “community placement” component of the course, which means I took part in a variety of activities in my community, and learned to reflect upon how they contributed to my development as a genetic counsellor. I loved this component and learned so much about my community by participating in local events.

Staying on top of the work

There is no doubt that sometimes the “DUE” date is the “DO” date. In this program, I have not had the chance to get behind in my work as the classes at the end of the week are spent discussing and expanding upon the topics that the modules covered.

If I did not complete the work, it would show, and I would miss out on learning! I find the workload very manageable if I give myself enough time.

In conclusion, I have had an extremely positive experience with the blended learning model so far, and I highly recommend it!
