Released in July, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2018 were announced by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.
With more than 4000 universities ranked, UTS Communication climbed into the Global Top 100 (76-100) in this year’s ranking and is equal 4th in Australia.
ShanghaiRanking began to publish Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by academic subjects in 2009.
In addition to the UTS Communication result, the subject area of Political Science was ranked mainly due to the number of publications meeting the publication threshold for this year, the number of publications in the Top Journals; and the number of papers with international collaborators.
We have engaged in a deliberate strategy over the last 4 years to ensure that our Social and Political Sciences area ranks amongst some of the best in the country. SPS staff have worked extremely hard in terms of their research which has also had a positive impact on the teaching program - Professor Mary Spongberg, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Social Sciences has always been a distinctive feature of the undergraduate Communication course. In 2016 it was reinvigorated into the Bachelor of Communication (Social and Political Sciences) which has become one of the strongest growing undergraduate courses in the School of Communication.
The course rigorously combines theory and practice with students not only learning about social research methods but applying the tools themselves. Data arising from interviews, participant observation, surveys and statistical analysis are understood by the students in the context of the theoretical and historical knowledge gained throughout the major.
FASS will be showcasing its strength in the area as part of Social Sciences Week from 10th to 16th September with the Inaugural Andrew Jakubowicz Annual Lecture and the Symposium: Migration, Social Inclusion and the Multicultural City.
