Six UTS Students complete first-ever unit at Sydney School of Entrepreneurship

A cohort of 40 budding entrepreneurs from across New South Wales, form the very first group to complete The Navigator unit at Sydney School of Entrepreneurship (SSE) with six students from the University of Technology Sydney forming part of this group.

University of Technology Sydney students include:

  1. William Lam
  2. Jodie Lam
  3. Rhianna Booth
  4. John Halias
  5. Rosie Dawson
  6. Wesley Linsao

The pilot unit saw students from across the state take part in online and face-to-face study, where students gained a deepened understanding of the entrepreneurial mindset.

Mapping the entrepreneurial ecosystem through the Massive Ecosystem Scavenger Hunt (MESH) enabled students to understand the Sydney startup community through experiential learning, an innovative approach used at SSE.

John Halias, 22, is part of the first cohort to complete the SSE core unit and is currently in his fourth year of a Construction Project Management Degree at UTS. John has taken full advantage of The Navigator unit to learn more about the start-up space, as well as discussing his ideas with fellow students, staff and mentors.

“I discovered my passion for entrepreneurship while living and studying abroad, so to come back to Australia and continue to explore this domain has been great.

“I love the idea of launching my own start-up, so I have really enjoyed taking part in SSE, meeting like-minded individuals, learning more about the network here in NSW and building a really solid foundation understanding for entrepreneurship,” said Halias.

SSE CEO Nick Kaye said, “This first cohort has attracted students from all 12 of our member higher education institutions and it’s been inspirational to see such diverse and talented students from right across the state.

“Our students represent a variety of disciplines including medicine, botany, engineering, design, law and technology to name a few. With a thirst to learn and support one another, they have been a true reflection of SSE and our value in cross-disciplinary learning,” said Kaye.

The Navigator unit was led by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) with the support of Macquarie University and Charles Sturt University and began with a two-day intensive workshop in August, with supplementary online work completed through OpenLearning.

Roy Green, Dean of the UTS Business School at the University of Technology Sydney said, “We were delighted to lead the first unit offered by the Sydney School of Entrepreneurship and gratified by the interest and enthusiasm of this first student cohort.

“Coming from all over NSW, they have had an opportunity to identify, map and analyse the innovation ecosystems around their own institutions, and gain an insight into the success factors for entrepreneurial ventures and networks,” said Green.

When fully operational, at least 1,000 students each year will participate in SSE courses and activities during their degree or TAFE program, with many more taking part in a program of co-curricular activities including workshops, hackathons, educational boot camps and networking events.
