PhD Scholarship - Local Government and Housing in Australia for the 21st Century

20 May 2016
UTS Tower building
Are you passionate about providing better services and support for local communities?

Do you have an interest in how local government can better meet the needs of individuals and groups?

Are you keen to advance your career and work with leading researchers on one of the cutting edge topics dominating public debate in Australia in 2016?

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the University of South Australia (UniSA) are each offering a PhD scholarship focused on how local governments can help find a solution to the challenge of providing affordable and appropriate housing for all Australians.

The PhD scholarships will be attached to a three year research project - Local government and housing in Australia for the 21st century - funded by the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Linkage project. Working with our 10 industry partners and other local governments across Australia, the successful candidates will have an opportunity to examine both the breadth of experience in local government in Australia while also examining a critical issue in considerable depth.

We strongly encourage those who already have experience in the local government sector to apply.

One scholarship will be based at the Institute for Public Policy and Governance at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS:IPPG). UTS:IPPG is an active research institute with access to a wide range of research expertise. UTS:IPPG is dedicated to enhancing our knowledge of local government and its effectiveness, and addressing  societal challenges and public policy issues. The second PhD scholarship is based at the University of South Australia’s Business School. Both institutions have excellent facilities and strongly encourage a collegiate ethos.

Scholarship Value and Duration
The successful candidate will be awarded a scholarship of $AU 26,288 per annum for three years, full-time study, with an annual adjustment. A top up scholarship of $5,000 per annum may be available for successful candidates.

Eligibility for PhD Scholarship
To be eligible to apply for the UTS or UniSA PhD programs and scholarships, a candidate must:
  • be a domestic candidate;
  • meet the entry requirements for the PhD program;
  • have a first-class Honours or equivalent;
  • commence in the year of the scholarship;
  • be enrolled as a full-time student.
