We spoke to third year Music and Sound Design student and 450 Records Label President Valerie Shishoian on her experience at UTS and what’s next.

Meet Valerie

I am from Sydney and have lived here my whole life. Some of my hobbies include playing soccer/futsal, singing and performing, and DJing – my favourite genre to DJ is Hard Techno!

I am studying Music and Sound Design. I am in my third and final year, expecting to graduate at the end of 2025.

“I chose to study at UTS as the university stood out to me in valuing its students, both academically and socially. Not only have the faculty and staff been a highlight, but all the people I have met and friends I have made has made the experience of studying at UTS worthwhile.”

Why Music and Sound Design at UTS?

I have always had a big passion for music, performing and entertainment. I grew up singing and dancing, and wanted a career full of excitement and adventure. At one point I wanted to study Law or Business, however towards the end of high school, I wanted to learn how to create and produce music, and discover all aspects of the music and sound industry. I ultimately decided to follow my true passion for music.

I chose to study at UTS as the university stood out to me in valuing its students, both academically and socially. Not only have the faculty and staff been a highlight, but all the people I have met and friends I have made has made the experience of studying at UTS worthwhile.

My experience at UTS has allowed me to expand on my knowledge, my connections and my skills. My course has built the foundations of my career, enhanced my music production skills and taught me all there is to know about working in the music industry. Not only that, but the faculty for my degree have been incredibly supportive and have taught us the power of creativity and innovation.

A major highlight for me has been completing the 450 Records project, a student led record label that is part of the Music Business and Professional Practice subject within my course. I had the honour of being the Label President, where I led our team to create, promote and launch 2 sold-out live music events at The Vanguard, Newtown. This experience has developed my leadership and networking skills, and by far is the best highlight of my time at UTS.

What’s next?

My ultimate career goal is to either work as an A&R manager, managing and supporting artists to push creativity, or an event manager for a large-scale record label. I do hope to get the opportunity to work overseas, specifically the USA or UK, and expand my knowledge of music production, as well as create some of my own music.

Do you have any advice for students trying to decide what to study?

My advice would be to follow your instincts. It can take a while to discover what to study or what career path you would want to take but ensure that it is something you are passionate about. For any incoming students studying at UTS, make the most of your experience by getting involved with social clubs, volunteering for events or even actively seeking out feedback and support from your lecturers or tutors.
