Third and final year Media Arts and Production student Harry Lewis spoke to us about his passion for filmmaking, his experience at UTS, and what’s next.

Meet Harry

I’m originally from Moss Vale in the Southern Highlands and now live with friends in Randwick. In my spare time, I love writing, watching films, and talking about them with friends. I’m also passionate about good food and spending time with the people I care about.

I’m studying Media Arts and Production. I’m in my third and final year, and I expect to graduate in May next year.

Portrait of Harry Lewis

“I recently received the Sony Capstone Prize for my pitch of my final-year film, The Sunbaker. This award was a huge honour, not only because it recognised my creative vision, but also because it highlighted how UTS connects students with industry leaders. Having Sony directly involved in student projects shows the incredible opportunities UTS provides.”

Media Arts and Production

Why UTS?

I wanted to build and refine my skills in film and television production, but I also wanted a broader university experience rather than the narrow focus of a traditional film school. UTS felt like the right balance - industry-relevant training paired with the vibrancy of campus life.

I was drawn to the variety within the Communications degree, not just the film and media components. I’ve always loved writing, and the course offered the chance to explore multiple creative avenues while still focusing on production.

The Media Lab facilities and access to professional-grade equipment have been invaluable, and the teaching staff are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. I also appreciate how connected the course is to industry - there are constant emails about internships and opportunities that help bridge the gap between study and professional practice. That was how I found an internship at Channel 9, which directly led to a casual job with the network, making it a pivotal step in my career.

I recently received the Sony Capstone Prize for my pitch of my final-year film, The Sunbaker. This award was a huge honour, not only because it recognised my creative vision, but also because it highlighted how UTS connects students with industry leaders. Having Sony directly involved in student projects shows the incredible opportunities UTS provides.

What’s next?

My ultimate goal is to start my own production company. In the meantime, I hope to gain experience in the industry in roles such as production assistant, director, or writer. I’d also love the chance to work and live overseas, building my career internationally. At this stage, I’m focused on completing my degree and seeing where the industry takes me, though I’m always open to further study down the track.

Do you have any advice for future students?

At the end of the day, what you get out of university is up to you. If you want to simply graduate with a degree, you can - but if you’re proactive, there are endless opportunities to make the most of your time here. UTS has an incredibly strong connection to industry across all fields, and that’s something I don’t think any other university offers at the same level.
