The Academic Year Dates outline the critical dates for each teaching calendar and session at UTS. This will include session start and end dates, census dates, study vacation (StuVac), result publication, exam and final assessment periods. While studying, it’s essential to know the important dates that may impact you.
The Provost and Senior Vice-President approve the Academic Year Dates, which are set based on the statement of principles approved by the Academic Board.

Graduate research students Coursework census date applies to Graduate Research Students who are enrolled in coursework subject(s) for the following course variations:
- Course transfer (includes transfer from Master’s by Research to PhD; transfer from PhD to Master’s by Research; transfer courses and/or thesis subjects within or to another faculty)
- Change study load (also known as attendance pattern) (from full-time to part-time or vice versa)
- Withdraw from coursework subject(s)
- Withdraw from PhD/Master’s by Research course
- Apply for Leave of Absence for student(s)
Graduate research students Research census dates: applies to Graduate Research Students who are not enrolled in coursework subjects for the following course variations:
- Apply for Leave of Absence for student(s)
- Submit changes to residency
- Withdraw from course PhD/Master’s by Research.

Includes: one day on which formal classes may be scheduled to make up for those missed due to public holidays or University emergencies in the first half of the teaching session; activity-based learning such as field trips, etc. Weekend before Mid-session StuVac: assessment and classes may be scheduled.
Students must be advised of these activities at the beginning of the teaching session as part of the subject outline.
Does not include: formal classes; assessment submission deadlines; examinations. Weekend at the end of Mid-session StuVac: no assessment or classes except for block mode subjects.
Students on professional experience placements do not participate in StuVac.

Weekend before Final StuVac: assessment and classes may be scheduled.
Does not include: formal classes; assessment deadlines.
Faculties must not introduce any new material in this week (with the exception of the catch-up class schedule due to public holidays or University emergencies). Weekend at the end of Final StuVac: no assessment or classes except for block mode subjects.
Students on professional experience placements do not participate in StuVac.
