Opportunity

An innovative artificial intelligence-based model that can analyse images and videos captured from the back of the eye, and classify them based on features of the blood vessels observed.

Background

The eye is the only organ that provides direct access to its internal structure. The microvascular network of the retina, the inner light sensitive layer of the eye, is a crucial point of clinical assessment for not only eye-specific but also several brain-related diseases.

Anatomically, retinal blood vessels travel through the intracranial and intraocular space and thus, characterising any abnormalities associated with these blood vessels can provide an insight into eye or brain specific changes. Despite their clinical importance, an autonomous and objective method for characterising and extracting such features does not exist.

Our Solution

Researchers at UTS have designed and developed an all in one portable retinal imaging device that captures image/videos from the eye and then uses an AI-based framework (trained on a proprietary dataset) to extract the aforementioned microvascular features.

Potential Applications

  • Non-invasive estimation of intracranial pressure.

  • Early identification of glaucoma and monitoring its progression.

  • Screening for cardiovascular disease’s (e.g., atherosclerosis).

IP Status

The invention is the subject of a Provisional Patent AU2023901868.
