Opportunity can make all the difference to a student striving to achieve their dreams. But right now, opportunity is not equal for all.
Only 17% of Australians from low socioeconomic backgrounds attend university, even though they represent 25% of our population.
Meanwhile, in 2021 and 2022, studies found a worrying decline in the number of low SES students (12%), regional, rural and remote students (8%), and First Nations students (8%) commencing higher education.

Education transformed Katie’s life
When 18-year-old Katie joined the UTS nursing program, she wasn’t just starting a degree – she was rewriting her future. The eldest daughter of Chinese Cambodian parents, Katie was determined to become the first in her family to attend higher education.
But despite her hard work, university seemed out of reach. Attending high school in a low SES suburb, Katie didn't have access to the same educational resources as other students.
With her year 12 exams approaching, Katie was worried that she wouldn’t be able to get the score she needed to get into nursing.
Thankfully, Katie’s story followed a different path. UTS offered her a place through the U@Uni Academy – a program that creates opportunities for talented students to enter university without relying on their ATAR.
The program changed my life. It showed me that I’m as good as everyone else, and it motivated me to keep pushing for my dreams.
