Join artist Akil Ahamat and UTS Music and Sound Design Associate Professor, Dr Robert Sazdov, for a lunchtime conversation on the layered sonic strategies underpinning the exhibition Extinguishing Hope.

Now showing at UTS Gallery until 19 May 2025, Extinguishing Hope features a multi-screen installation that explores the aesthetics and psychosocial affects of ever-unfolding disaster. A UTS alumnus with a degree in Sound & Music Design, Ahamat weaves immersive sound techniques throughout the exhibition, informed by sonic immersion theory, contemporary dance music, cinematic languages, and the rhythmic poetry of language and speech.

Anchored in Ahamat’s interdisciplinary practice and Dr Sazdov’s intimate knowledge of sonic immersion theory, Listening in the Dark will consider sound’s capacity to disrupt, guide, and transform. From the history of acousmatic listening to the intimacy of ASMR, join us in the Gallery to explore how sonic theories and technologies are expanding the possibilities of listening in a public space.

The panel will be facilitated by Alice Rezende, Assistant Curator, UTS Gallery & Art Collection.

Join us for a deep listen.
