ISF is partnering with Oxfam Australia to conduct action learning research on the nexus between Gender Equality, Disability, Social Inclusion (GEDSI) and community based Just Energy Transitions (JET).

Oxfam has been implementing JET initiatives across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

Oxfam Australia and the UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures (ISF) have partnered to undertake action learning research which creates an opportunity to systematically examine how these initiatives intersect with GEDSI at the community level. This will build an evidence base that highlights best practices and key considerations for designing and implementing inclusive JET programs.

The primary aim of the project is to strengthen understanding of how women‑led models are shaping and driving more just and inclusive renewable energy transitions in Southeast Asia.

The project is being conducted in Indonesia and the Philippines, with support from local partners Penabulu Foundation (Indonesia) and Oxfam Pilipinas. These partners are working alongside ISF to assess selected Oxfam‑led initiatives and to ensure the research is grounded in local contexts and priorities.

Additionally, ISF researchers have adopted a locally‑led research approach, engaging local researchers in Indonesia and the Philippines to strengthen relevance, ownership, and impact.

The project will generate practical guidance to support learning, adaptation, and scalability of inclusive JET approaches within the region and beyond. Findings will also be used to develop evidence‑based advice and advocacy messages aimed at influencing policymakers to prioritise GEDSI considerations in renewable energy policies and projects, from local to global levels.
