Overview
Student placements are situations where an academic supervisor organises for a student (or students) to attend the workplace of a host organisation acting as a work-based learning provider. The UTS Internships Management Policy prescribes requirements of course related work experience and includes safety responsibilities of the university and faculties.
Responsibilities
Host organisations
The responsibilities of a host organisation hosting UTS students include:
- ensuring students are provided with a safe workplace
- ensuring students are informed of relevant health and safety requirements and procedures as part of an appropriate induction to the workplace
- informing the university of any accident, injury or safety incident suffered by the student.
UTS staff
UTS staff who organise student placements have a responsibility to seek assurances from organisations hosting UTS students that the health and safety of these students is well-managed.
The UTS student supervisor must check that the host organisation has an adequate health and safety management system. To do this, request that the host organisation complete the Health and Safety checklist in either:
- the CareerHub online application or
- the Host Organisation Health and Safety Checklist (Word 17 kB).

To check that the work environment is safe, complete the Off-Campus Facilities Health and Safety Checklist. When completed, the UTS supervisor of the student should raise any concerns with the supervisor from the host organisation.
