Collaboration encourages smart cities and education links

19 February 2018

Memorandum of Understanding signed with Institut Teknologi Bandung, encouraging research, collaboration and citizen engagement on Smart Cities.

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has expanded its collaboration in Indonesia, signing a new Memorandums of Understanding.

Speaking at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Australia Indonesia Digital Forum (AIDF) in Jakarta on 31 January 2018, Professor Anthony Burke, Associate Dean, International & External Engagement for the UTS School of Architecture, University of Technology Sydney said, "We are delighted to collaborate with the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in supporting the Jakarta Smart Cities initiatives."

"We see many areas of mutual interest which will benefit people in both countries, and throughout the Asia Pacific region. We are enthusiastic about the opportunity for good design solutions, supported by technology and data, to engage with citizens in better shaping our urban environments and cities of the future."

We are delighted to collaborate with the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in supporting the Jakarta Smart Cities initiatives.

With the United Nations predicting the world is likely to have 41 mega-cities with 10 million inhabitants or more by 2030, the importance of building sustainable Smart Cities that meet the needs of citizens is critical.

Following the Role of Smart Citizenship in Smart Cities: Lessons Learned seminar and workshops last year, UTS has been collaborating with Professor Dr Ir Suhono Harso Supangkat and representatives from ITB. This collaboration has now progressed to the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the universities.

"The ITB-UTS MOU will support us in developing a framework to assist cities in Indonesia, Australia and Asia Pacific in creating Smart Cities solutions, encouraging more start-ups, promoting sustainable urban living, health and wellbeing, and engaging citizens," said Professor Suhono, Chairman of the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurships Development and Chairman of the Smart Indonesia Initiatives.
