The UTS  Sport & Exercise Science Telepractice Clinic is a not-for-profit teaching and learning clinic that provides quality services to the community.

About the clinic

The UTS Sport & Exercise Science Telepractice Clinic is only suitable for people who are apparently healthy and do not have a known health condition or injury requiring clinical management or supervision.

Sessions are delivered by third-year students enrolled in the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science and are supervised by highly qualified and experienced Exercise Specialists. Students are working toward accreditation as Exercise Scientists, their training and scope of practice do not include the treatment or management of health conditions.

Our clinic provides evidence-based sport and exercise practices to meet the individual needs of each client. Each program begins with an initial assessment to establish the client’s goals and physical capabilities. Based on this, students prescribe and deliver a personalised, evidence-based exercise program.

Clients participate in ten weekly online sessions via Zoom, with the expectation that they actively perform the exercise program during each session.

As this is a teaching clinic, what is considered apparently healthy is at the discretion of the UTS Telepractice Clinic.

Program schedule

The UTS Sport & Exercise Science Telepractice runs structured 10-week programs twice a year, the 2027 dates are:

  • 2nd March to 27th May; and
  • 10th August to 11th November.

Please note that the clinic operates in alignment with the UTS academic calendar, and all services are by appointment only.

There will be a short break during each program to coincide with the university teaching break, so sessions will pause briefly before resuming for the remainder of the 10-week schedule.

Client commitment

To ensure a meaningful learning experience for our UTS students, meet accreditation standards, and support client progress, we ask that clients:

  • MUST commit to their scheduled appointments.
  • Attend a 45 minute session at the same time and day each week for the full 10-week period (Note: There will be a pause during the university teaching break).
  • Actively participate in the exercise program during the Zoom sessions.

UTS Sport & Exercise Science Telepractice Clinic transcript

Kellie Ellis – Associate Lecturer (Work Integrated Learning)

The Telepractice Clinic is one of the services that we provide here at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation. This service is open to members of the public and it operates from Level 2 of our UTS building in the Moore Park precinct. Clients can undertake the service remotely, via Zoom, from the comfort of their own home or a venue of their choosing.

The clinic provides an important community service, as it allows people the opportunity to undertake a free exercise intervention with emerging exercise scientists who are under the supervision of a qualified industry professional.

People aged 18 years and above can book in and be a client. They need to be apparently healthy, and this means that they need to not have any underlying medical conditions or injuries. If they do, we may ask that they get a medical clearance from their general practitioner, which will allow them to then participate in the program.

The session delivery is really flexible, due to us using Zoom as the mode of delivery. Clients can choose any location they wish, and feel most comfortable in, that is safe for them to undertake the exercise program.

Week one of all programs will be an assessment. This assessment involves questions by our students and also physical testing of the client. This testing will then determine what the program looks like and the physical delivery of the sessions thereafter.

No equipment is needed by our clients for the program, and this is determined in week one. If the client does have equipment, we will incorporate that into their programming.

Clients will go through physical activity in every session. The physical activity might range from a little mini circuit that they do in their lounge room, it could be push-ups, sit-ups, squats, lunges. It may be some cardio activity. It all depends on the space that the client has to undertake the program and also what their goals are.

We’ve got lots of different clients that we can help within our clinic, they can be training for a marathon, looking to increase their mobility, their flexibility, their strength, their power. It all depends on client needs.

Distinguished Professor Aaron Coutts – Head, School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation

It’s really important as a university that we provide best available practice that’s informed by research. So what we do here at the clinic is informed by the latest research and the latest information on professional practice. The system we’ve developed here helps our clients in that they get free service, a high-quality service,  and you’re also supporting the development of the future generation of sport and exercise professionals.

Karly Vouros – Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science

It’s helped me to become more confident in prescribing exercises for the general population. So having access to real-life clients ranging from 18-year-olds through to 70-year-olds, coordinating exercises with the great superviso who has a wealth of knowledge and seeing the clients grow each week, seeing them realise that they really enjoy it. Seeing that they want to improve their health because they want to, that’s really rewarding.

Is this clinic suitable for you?

This student-led clinic is for people who are apparently healthy and want to improve their general fitness, wellbeing or performance. It does not provide treatment, rehabilitation or management of medical conditions or injuries.

Please disclose any diagnosed health conditions, current injuries, ongoing pain or symptoms in your registration form - even if they are well-controlled or you do not think they affect your ability to exercise.

Clinic staff will review this information before confirming your eligibility and appointment.

If you disclose a health condition or injury, you may be asked to provide medical clearance and further information. Suitability will then be assessed on a case-by-case basis, considering the nature and extent of the condition and the level of care or supervision required. Providing medical clearance does not guarantee eligibility, and participation may be declined if your needs fall outside the scope of the Telepractice Clinic.

If you are seeking an exercise intervention for the treatment and/or management of a clinical condition or injury, we encourage you to consider looking into participating in our sister program UTS Exercise Physiology Clinic, which may be more suitable for your needs.
