Course aims

Graduates of the Master of Arts in Cultural Studies are able to:

  • draw on an understanding of the major shifts in contemporary thought
  • conduct original 'readings' of cultural texts
  • think critically about what produces 'common' sense or 'common' readings of texts
  • produce innovative, more inclusive readings and explanations for cultural texts and phenomenon which will critique a tendency to produce general theories
  • evaluate theoretical claims and develop original interventions in current debates
  • use contextual analysis to widen debates and understandings around cultural groupings, e.g. sub-cultures, ethnicities, etc.
  • develop an appreciation of the way in which research both invents and reflects the site of study
  • conduct presentations and collaborative projects with others to develop and communicate their innovative insights
  • devise and conduct research projects that are culturally sensitive and ethically sound.

Admission requirements

To gain entry to this course an applicant must demonstrate a very strong level of education, background and capability. It is expected that applicants have an undergraduate degree as well as a developed interest in the area of cultural studies and have proven capability in this field.
