Welcome to the Australian Stuttering Research Centre. We are a unique organisation where speech pathologists and clinical psychologists work together to improve the health and quality of life of those who stutter, and their families, globally. We conduct research to help understand the nature of stuttering and to develop new treatments for it.

This development is intended to allow children and adults anywhere in the world, who have internet access, to receive an effective treatment for stuttering without cost and without having to see a speech pathologist or a clinical psychologist.
In addition to our cutting edge research, we provide clinical services to those who stutter, and we provide workforce training to speech pathologists in Australia and internationally. You can find links to additional information about these services at this website.
Research training is essential to the future of treatment and research for the disorder of stuttering, so we are proud of our postgraduate research training degrees. We have graduates throughout Australia and around the world who have received their doctorates as students with us. Our research training environment for such students is a dynamic and diverse learning experience, covering areas of speech pathology, clinical psychology, linguistics, education, epidemiology, biostatistics, medical imaging, information technology, and qualitative research methods.
Our vision
Verbal communication is fundamental to human society. It is the mechanism underpinning daily interactions with others, around which social and occupational networks are established, developed, and sustained. Stuttering is a prevalent communication disorder that begins suddenly and unpredictably as speech develops during the early years of life.
Our vision at the Australian Stuttering Research Centre is to understand the cause of the disorder and improve the health and quality of life for those who stutter and their families. This includes reducing the global public health problem of insufficient access to treatments for stuttering.
We are working to achieve our vision by:
- understanding the nature of stuttering
- developing and trialling new speech and anxiety treatments for the disorder
- developing internet interventions for the disorder
- providing treatment services by way of our Stuttering Treatment Clinic
- training future researchers for the field
- providing workforce training for speech pathologists
- hosting international conferences about the disorder.
We collaborate with speech pathologists and clinical psychologists in Australia and internationally to gather the expertise needed to achieve these aims.
