Meet Geoffrey McNamara AM, a passionate and decorated champion for science and public school education who has dedicated 33 years to teaching.
Geoff’s innovative approach and commitment to student development have left an indelible mark on the education system. In 2008, he developed the Science Mentors Program, connecting students in years 8 to 10 with scientific mentors.
This program taps into students' passion for science, giving them real-world experience and fostering a deeper understanding of the subject. Geoff’s dedication to nurturing young minds has been a cornerstone of his teaching philosophy.

Geoff’s contributions to science education extend beyond the classroom. He has published over 100 papers for science magazines, published several books, and contributed to the development of several telescopes, including the McNamara–Saunders Astronomical Teaching Telescopes.
His efforts were recognised in 2018 when he was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for his significant service to secondary education, particularly in science and astronomy.

Embracing change and solving problems
Geoff has emphasised the importance of adaptability and problem-solving. He believes these skills are crucial for individual and societal survival in a rapidly changing world. Geoff’s educational journey, including a Diploma of Teaching in Technical Education (1989), a Bachelor of Adult Education (1997) and a Graduate Certificate in Design Technology (2000) from UTS, has been a testament to lifelong learning.

Supporting quiet and thoughtful students
Geoff is a strong advocate for recognising and nurturing the unique qualities of each student. He stresses the importance of allowing quiet and introverted students to thrive in their own time and way. Geoff believes creating an environment where these students are not overshadowed by their extroverted peers is essential for their development.
Geoff’s approach to teaching has always been about helping students find and value themselves. He believes the future is unpredictable, and a carefully planned career a fantasy. Instead, he advises new graduates to be prepared for life challenges and follow their heart.
