About us

The National Telecom Resilience Centre (NTRC) is an Australian-first telecommunications research centre designed to strengthen Australia’s emergency communications infrastructure.

Our mission

To enable reliable access to critical services, including emergency calls, across mobile, fixed broadband and satellite networks in the event of network failures.

This partnership has been established with funding from the Communications Alliance and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts (DICTRCSA).

Our work

The NTRC was created in response to the Australian Government’s review of the 2023 Optus outage, which impacted internet, mobile and fixed-line services.

Our research is focused on identifying and overcoming device connectivity and network failures that can limit access to critical services like 000.

  • Talent development

Our remit includes a robust internship program designed to expand Australia’s telecoms research and engineering workforce. By connecting interns with opportunities to work on real-world research challenges, we will help to build a domestic talent pool that meets industry and government need.

  • Host of the Controlled Test Facility

The NTRC hosts the Controlled Test Facility. This multi-band, multi-frequency testing environment contains the largest accessible radio frequency chamber in the southern hemisphere. Using cell site equipment from Telstra, Optus and TPG, Australia’s three largest mobile network operators, the CTF team will conduct twice-yearly tests of mobile devices to investigate failure scenarios across all three networks.
