Haihan Sun’s PhD research is focused on advanced omnidirectional base station antenna design, targeting potential applications in future 5G wireless systems.
A passion for omnidirectional antennas
“Omnidirectional antennas are a class of antenna that can radiate radio wave power uniformly in all directions on one plane,” she explains. “My aim is to study and design dual-polarised omnidirectional antennas that can have wideband, high gain performance yet remain compact in size.”
Based on this antenna element, a novel antenna array will be designed with enhanced feeding structure to meet the future 5G demands for higher data rate and energy efficiency. Omnidirectional antennas can have a variety of applications in Wireless LAN, television broadcasts, mobile satellites, and space vehicles, and she hopes the antenna she designs will deliver superior performance for mobile/space applications.
Haihan chose GBDTC for her PhD for its strong team of respected and experienced researchers and academics. “I enjoy studying in this dynamic research environment,” she says. “It is a great place for me to develop my research abilities and prepare myself for my future academic career.”

Haihan Sun commenced her PhD in August 2015 under the supervision of GBDTC Director, Professor Y Jay Guo. She holds a Bachelor degree from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) in China, for which she came first in her faculty and won a National Scholarship Award.
