A tribute to a remarkable leader whose educational impact leaves a lasting legacy nationally and within the university.
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Emeritus Professor Tony Moon OAM, a much loved and admired colleague.
For more than five decades, Tony devoted himself to UTS, helping to shape not only our institution, but also the lives of countless colleagues and students.
Throughout his distinguished career, Tony served UTS in many significant leadership roles, including Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Science and UTS Graduate School, and Chair of Academic Board. He was among the group of leaders who guided UTS through its transformation from a technical college into the internationally recognised university we are today.
He also played a pivotal role in advancing educational collaboration between Australia and Thailand, creating enduring partnerships that benefited not only higher education but the broader community.
Tony was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2025 for service to tertiary education, recognising his outstanding legacy as an educator, educational leader and innovator.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Parfitt said it was a privilege to work closely with Tony for many years.
“I came to know not only his remarkable intellect and leadership, but also his unwavering generosity and kindness. He was someone whose perspective was deeply valued and whose commitment to the university, his colleagues and his students never wavered,” Professor Parfitt said.
“Even after his retirement, it was always a pleasure to see Tony supporting colleagues, mentoring students and continuing to contribute to the UTS community.
“Tony’s leadership, academic excellence and strategic vision earned him widespread admiration and respect. Yet, for those of us fortunate enough to know him, it was his generosity of spirit and genuine care for others that defined him most. He leaves behind not only an extraordinary professional legacy but also the memory of a kind and compassionate person.
“Tony was passionate about international linkages in education and research, and his long connections with Thailand in particular have contributed significantly to Australia’s profile in the region.
“On behalf of the entire UTS community, I extend my deep sympathies to Tony’s family and loved ones.”
A celebration of Tony’s life and contribution to UTS will be held in coming months so that colleagues, friends and former students can come together to honour his remarkable life.
