New joint statement highlights need for a statewide strategic plan

Palliative Care NSW and UTS IMPACCT are calling on the NSW Government to develop a new statewide strategic plan to improve access to palliative and end-of-life care.

The joint statement is based on research and a policy roundtable held in March 2025. The event brought together 46 participants from government, health, aged care, academia, and community sectors to identify challenges and opportunities in delivering palliative care across the state.

The current NSW framework, in place since 2019, provides a strong foundation but is due to expire at the end of 2024. Stakeholders say that renewed focus, innovation  and investment will be essential to meet increasing demand.

The joint statement recommends several priorities for action:

  • A needs-based approach to palliative care
  • Investment in relational care across multiple settings
  • Workforce development and capacity-building
  • Investigation of enabling technologies
  • The establishment of a dedicated palliative care policy centre in NSW

Palliative Care NSW and UTS IMPACCT acknowledge the progress made to date and call for continued collaboration across the sector to ensure that all people in NSW can access high-quality, compassionate palliative care when they need it.

A detailed report from the roundtable discussions will be released in the coming months.
